NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women’s soccer team fell 2-0 against Villanova in a pre-season scrimmage Wed. night at Delaware Mini-Stadium. The teams played two extra 10-minute overtime periods as well, with Villanova scoring one goal in the first OT and neither team scoring in the second.

Approximately 75 fans looked on as the Blue Hens played a 2007 Big East Quarterfinalist to a scoreless tie until the 66th minute of play. Delaware fought hard to tie the game back up, but it was Villanova that would strike again with 2:50 remaining on the clock.

Delaware senior Annie Bevan played the first scoreless half of play and saved five shots. Freshman Breanna Stemler took over in the second half and saved four shots and allowed two goals.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Scott Grzenda (at right) was pleased with what he saw from his team.

“I thought we played really well," said Grzenda. "It’s only the second time ever we’ve been able to have a scrimmage with two overtime periods, and I was just glad we had the legs.”

The Blue Hens have one more scrimmage against Lehigh on Sat. night, 7 p.m. at Delaware Mini Stadium before they open the 2008 season Aug. 29-31 with the Blue Hen Classic.
