NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women’s soccer team was dealt a crushing loss at the hands of William & Mary Friday night at Delaware Mini Stadium.
The Tribe scored two unanswered goals, the second coming halfway into the second overtime, to beat the Hens 2-1 and stay unbeaten in the all-time series.
Delaware came out strong and took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by senior captain Dana Rodgers (at right) a little over five minutes in. The goal was her second of the year.
Later in the first half, the Hens had a chance to score an insurance goal, but forward Stacie Dulkis fell in the box after there appeared to be some contact with a Tribe defender but there was no foul called.
That play would prove pivotal as William & Mary tied the game up five minutes into the second half when Danielle Axenfeld scored off a deflection by Delaware keeper Breanna Stemler. The Hens would take just two shots in the second half, and the game would go to overtime a 1-1 tie.
In the first overtime, Delaware had a penalty kick with just over two minutes left in the period, but Alli D’Amico’s shot hit the left upright and went out of bounds.
Then four minutes into the second overtime, W&M’s Sarah Quinlan scored an unassisted goal as she fired a shot from just outside the eighteen and put it past Stemler for the game-winner.
Delaware (4-5-1, 1-2) has had all five of its losses come to teams that are either in the top 10 of their respective regions or are receiving votes for the top-15, according to the last Soccer Buzz Magazine Poll.
St. John’s (No. 4), Yale (No. 5) and Hofstra (No. 9) are among the top-10 in the Northeast Region, William & Mary is ranked no. 7 in the Mid-Atlantic Region, and Saint Joseph’s received votes for the top-15 in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Even the Hens’ lone tie this year was against Central Connecticut State, who also received votes for the Northeast Region’s top-15.
Delaware’s schedule does not get any easier, as it faces Old Dominion (No. 6 Mid-Atlantic) on Sunday and then is on the road next weekend to take on CAA powers James Madison and Virginia Commonwealth who are No. 9 and No. 14, respectively in the Mid-Atlantic.
The Blue Hens hold a 6-0-1 all-time advantage in the series against Old Dominion heading into action at Delaware Mini Stadium on Sunday, including a 3-1 win last year over the eventual 2007 CAA champions.
