BROOKLINE, Mass. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team placed five members on the 2009 All-Colonial Athletic Association Team announced by the conference office Thursday night on the eve of the semifinals of the CAA Championship hosted by Northeastern University.

Senior midfielder Caitlyn Germain led all honors for the Blue Hens, as she was named to the All-CAA second team. Three Hens were selected to the third team as senior midfielder Kasie Shover, junior defender Morgan Warrington and senior goalkeeper Annie Bevan were recognized, while freshman midfielder Tania Domingos was named to the All-CAA rookie team.

Northeastern freshman forward Devin Petta was selected as both the Player and Rookie of the Year in voting by the league’s head coaches. Also receiving top honors from the conference were William & Mary sophomore back Diana Weigel as CAA Defender of the Year and Northeastern’s Ed Matz as CAA Coach of the Year.

Selected to the all-rookie team in 2005, the second team in 2007 and the third team in 2008, Germain (at right) started each of the Hens’ 17 games this season, and added a goal and three assists.

“Germ [Germain] has played a more defensive roll this year, shutting down the attacking back from the opposing team,” said veteran head coach Scott Grzenda. “She’s always a threat offensively. She broke down many defenders and attacked both inside and out this season.”

Shover, who also had 17 starts to her credit, tallied the game-winning goal against William & Mary and added an assist for the Hens during their 2009 campaign.

“She’s [Shover] a dynamic, attacking center mid. A very talented player who attacks at pace and always found a way to win the ball in the middle of the field,” noted Grzenda.

Playing her first season in a Delaware uniform, Warrington proved to be a solid threat in the Hens’ backfield. The UMBC transfer led the defense that held the lowest goals-against average in the conference. Warrington started each of Delaware’s 17 contests and added two assists for the Blue and Gold.

“Morgan is a great 1 v 1 defender,” stated Grzenda. “She’s fast enough not to get beaten over the top and is a lethal threat on the attack. Teams needed to adjust for her speed and attacking style.”

Bevan, who led the CAA with a 0.66 goals-against average and ranked second with a strong .861 save percentage, tallied seven shutouts in goal this season. Starting 16 games, Bevan made 68 stops and finished the season with a 6-5-4 record in goal after allowing just 11 goals.

“Annie played a key role in keeping our team in games,” Grzenda said. “She proved she was one of the best keepers in the conference.”

Rounding out the Hens’ honorees, Domingos started 10 games, including the final nine, and played in each of the 17 contests en route to being named to the All-Rookie team. Domingos scored a pair of goals for Delaware having only attempted 10 shots on the season.

“Tania’s a technical and creative midfielder who was able to slot balls to forwards and possess the ball when needed. She will be a key player in our midfield next year,” Grzenda concluded.

Delaware finished tied with Old Dominion University for a seventh-place finish in the CAA. The pair of teams each went 3-4-4 this season in league play. Finishing the season at .500, 6-6-5 overall, the Blue Hens’ four CAA ties is the most conference deadlocks tallied in program history, while the five overall ties also rank as the most in Blue Hen history.

The five honorees are the most the Hens have placed on a conference team since having six selected to the All-America East team in 2000.
