NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team defeated visiting Drexel University, 1-0, on senior night at Delaware Mini-Stadium on Friday evening.
Delaware (6-6-5 overall, 3-4-4 CAA) outshot Drexel (4-13-1 overall, 2-8-1 CAA), 17-7, en route to notching a Colonial Athletic Association victory to end its 2009 campaign.
Seniors Annie Bevan, Megan Delaney, Caitlyn Germain, and Kasie Shover, alongside their parents, were honored prior to the game by a speech presented by veteran head coach Scott Grzenda.
“It’s so sad to see these players leave the team, but they’ll always be a part of the program,” said Grzenda.
Following the pre-game presentation, Delaware took the field and went to work. Though the scoreboard did not reflect the Hens’ first-half dominance, the statistics did. Largely controlling the first frame of play, Delaware outshot the Dragons, 7-3.
A ball from Shover to junior Morgan Warrington in the 16th minute looked to give the Blue and Gold a one-goal advantage, but Warrington’s shot flew wide left. Sophomore Stacie Dulkis was in position to get a boot on the wide shot, though she deflected the ball wide right to leave the game deadlocked at 0.
In the second stint, UD chanced the go-ahead when sophomore Laura Klebe sent a ball to Dulkis (at right) from the left side end line. Dulkis fired a shot from the top left corner of the box that collided with the left post at 54:45. Delaware continued to pressure, opening the half with six back-to-back shots in Drexel territory.
The Hens finally converted when Dulkis connected with a serve from freshman Ali Miller in the 58th minute. Her initial attempt was blocked, though she gathered the rebound and placed a second shot past Drexel goalkeeper, Nicole Sinclair, for the game-winning goal.
Delaware continued to dictate play, though Dulkis’ goal was all it took to put away the Dragons.
Bevan recorded her 15th and final shutout of her collegiate career, making three saves in goal. Sinclair stopped three for the Dragons, while Michelle McKinley was not forced to make a save in her 4:28 of action for the Dragons.
Shover, Germain and Delaney tallied two shots each during their final game wearing the Blue Hens’ uniform.
“A tremendous way to end the season,” applauded Grzenda. “The work ethic and heart of this entire team, especially the seniors, really showed tonight.”
