FAIRFAX, Va. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 match to George Mason University at George Mason Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
George Mason (11-4-2 overall, 3-3-2 CAA) scored on a penalty kick following a Delaware (5-5-4 overall, 2-3-3 CAA) red card at 89:32, en route to a Colonial Athletic Association victory.
Hens’ senior goalkeeper Annie Bevan was charged with a red card following a hard tackle in the Delaware box during the final minute of play. After being replaced in goal by sophomore Breanna Stemler, George Mason’s Sasha Vido set up for the penalty kick.
Vido found a vacant low spot in the middle of goal and placed the shot past Stemler for the game-winning score.
The Hens had outshot the Patriots, 8-5, in the first half of play, though the pair of teams played through 45 minutes without netting a goal. Back from the break, the teams were scoreless for another 44:32. In the second stint, Mason controlled all play, firing 13 shots to the Hens’ four.
Delaware senior Kasie Shover (at right) led the Hens, having taken three shots, while Vido paced the Patriots with five.
Bevan made six saves for the Blue and Gold and GMU keeper, Katie Frey, stopped two.
Delaware will return to CAA action on Friday, Oct. 23 when it hosts Georgia State at 7 p.m.
