NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team took an early 2-0 lead over visiting Hofstra University, but the Pride tallied three second-half goals to upend the Hens, 3-2, at Delaware Mini-Stadium on Thursday evening.
In what served as the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams, Delaware (3-3-1 overall, 0-1 CAA) sophomore Stacie Dulkis netted back-to-back unassisted goals in the first half, but a Hofstra (4-3-1 overall, 1-0 CAA) goal with merely 1:49 lingering on the game clock handed the Hens their third loss of the season, and their first in conference action.
The Mahwah, N.J. native first went unassisted at 10:47 and chipped a shot from the top of the box just high of Hofstra keeper Krysten Farriella’s reach to give the Blue Hens an immediate 1-0 advantage.
Though the Hens were outshot in the first, 5-4, the Blue and Gold notched a second score when at 26:57 Dulkis (at right) gathered a hurried ball, dodged a slew of defenders along the end line, and again sent a high ball deep into goal.
A sluggish Hofstra took to the locker room at the half only to return to the field and dominate the latter 45. At 50:45 sophomore Laura Greene beat diving Delaware keeper, Annie Bevan, with a shot laced into the upper right-hand corner of the goal to Cut the Hens’ lead in half.
In the 67th minute, Delaware chanced a 3-1 advantage when senior Caitlyn Germain sent a cross ball parallel with the goal and connected with a header by senior co-captain Ilyssa Friedman, though Friedman’s lunge sent the ball wide left of the cage.
Still trailing by one, Pride’s Salma Tarik found success on a long-shot in the midst of a crowd to knot the game at 2-2 as the clock came to a halt 78:15 into play.
In the final 10 minutes, Hofstra was awarded a pair of corner kicks, while both teams where charged with multiple fouls. The Pride was able to maintain possession in its offensive end and score the game-winner at 88:11. Greene found the feet of junior Tiffaany Yovino who broke free of a cluster and sent a shot from the left side to score the game’s final goal.
The Hens returned to within goal-range, however they could not get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
Bevan made seven saves in goal for Delaware who will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 27 when they travel to Northeastern for a 1 p.m. CAA match-up.
