NEWARK, Del. - Sophomore Stacie Dulkis netted an overtime goal to award the University of Delaware women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over visiting Providence College at Delaware Mini-Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After sending a shot high over the goal merely 33 seconds into sudden victory play, the Blue Hens wasted little time finding the back of the net. Sophomore Leigh Victory found the feet of Dulkis (at right) 15 yards out, while Dulkis chipped the shot overtop of the Friars’ keeper to send the Hens’ bench swarming onto the field and secure Delaware’s second straight victory. The goal, which came 3:18 into the third stint of play, was the fifth career goal for Dulkis and her first this season.

With his team opening a season 2-0 for the first time since 2006, veteran head coach Scott Grzenda is ecstatic.

“Everyone on the team put forth an unbelievable effort today,” said Grzenda. “We knew the game was ours the whole 90 (minutes), we just needed to find the back of the net.”

Delaware had its chance to break the stalemate during regulation when senior Caitlyn Germain brought the ball down the field during the 42nd minute. The 2008 third team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection passed to freshman Melissa Pennington, who tapped the ball to freshman Mimi Kocela. In a scramble inches from the cage, senior Kasie Shover gained control of the ball and fired the ball towards goal, only to be redirected by Providence midfielder Jenna Roncarati. Roncarati made a crucial defensive save, sending the ball up and over the goal and out of play.

Senior goalkeeper Annie Bevan posted her 10th career shutout, making two saves during the action. Providence keeper Ashley Lewis stopped three shots for the Friars.

During the back-and-forth action, Delaware registered 10 shots while the Friars managed seven. The victors also led in corner kicks, 4-1.

The Blue Hens will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. as they play host to the Saint Joseph’s University Hawks in a non-conference match at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
