TOWSON, Md. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 match to Towson University at the Towson Center Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon.
Towson (6-9-1 overall, 2-5-0 CAA) outshot Delaware (5-4-4 overall, 2-2-3 CAA), 19-14, en route to the Colonial Athletic Association victory that snapped its five-game losing streak.
The Blue Hens got off to an early 1-0 lead when freshman Ali Miller (at right) connected with an assist from the feet of senior co-captain Kasie Shover at 7:44.
Though the Tigers outshot the Hens, 9-7, in the first half, the visitors held on to the one-goal advantage entering the half.
In the second stint of play, Towson was quick to knot the game, as Phyllicia Rosselli capitalized on a corner kick serve from Kaitlyn Zamroz. Rosselli headed the airborne ball out of the reach of Delaware keeper, Annie Bevan, at 49:15 for the score.
As time ticked from the clock, the Tiger offense continued to apply steady pressure in the Hens’ territory, though the Blue and Gold chanced the go-ahead in the 74th minute. Delaware found itself on a breakaway before Towson keeper, Jocelyn Papciak, committed a hard foul and was charged with a red card.
Following the red card, two additional Towson players were given yellow cards as UD set up for the direct kick. Shover laced the shot at replacement goalie, Cheyenne Skidmore, who made the key save.
Towson retaliated ten minutes later when the Hens committed a foul of their own in the box. Having been awarded a penalty kick at 84:12, Zamroz capitalized upon the opportunity and scored the Tigers’ game-winning goal.
The teams exchanged a pair of shots in the lingering minutes, but neither found the back of the net.
Bevan recorded a season-high eight saves in goal for the Hens, while Papciak stopped three for the Tigers and Skidmore, 2.
Delaware will return to CAA action on Sunday, Oct. 18 when it travels to George Mason for a 2 p.m. CAA match.
