NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team fell to visiting UNC Wilmington, 1-0, at Delaware Mini-Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Delaware (5-6-5 overall, 2-4-4 CAA) garnered a number of chances in the first period, though a second-half goal by UNC Wilmington (10-7-1 overall, 6-3-1 CAA) led the visiting squad to a Colonial Athletic Association victory.

“Soccer is a strange game,” said veteran head coach Scott Grzenda at the game’s end. “You can create all the chances you want, but until you start putting the ball in the back of the net, you’re not going to get the results you want.”

The Hens outshot the Seahawks, 10-4, in the first stint of play, though their scoring foes continued as Delaware was rejected a goal for the third straight game.

Delaware freshman Tania Domingos chanced a Delaware go-ahead at 8:55 following a UNCW foul. Senior Caitlyn Germain placed the kick at the feet of Domingos who laced a left-footed shot just wide of the open, top left corner of goal.

In the 13th minute of play, UD all but capitalized on its third corner of the contest when Germain served a ball to the center of the box. Delaware senior Kasie Shover and Domingos both got feet on it, however the Seahawk defense blocked both of UD’s attempts prior to sophomore Laura Klebe putting a shot on goal. Klebe’s shot was stopped by UNCW keeper, Caitlin Hunter, who made three saves throughout the game.

Delaware’s finest chance came at 37:28 when junior Morgan Warrington (at right) beat a pair of defenders and made a falling attempt at a goal which was stopped merely inches short of the goal line by UNCW defender, Jen Ludemann.

Though Delaware dominated the first half, the tables were turned in the second. The Seahawks outshot the Hens, 6-3, and tallied the game’s lone goal to win their second straight.

UNCW’s second shot of the half came on a corner-kick play in the 50th minute. Lindsay Henry took the corner and placed the ball in proximity of Laura Wilson who headed a shot at goal. Delaware goalkeeper, senior Annie Bevan, responded quickly as she slapped the ball out of goal contention and over the crossbar, keeping the 0-0 deadlock in tact. Bevan made three stops in goal for the Hens.

Delaware freshman Ali Miller gathered a ball from Germain at 51:36 and fired off a shot that flew into the outer left side of the net. Domingos’ shot looked to pick up the Hens’ offense, but the Seahawks continued to pressure UD and were rewarded at 61:23 following a Delaware foul.

Lindsay Henry fed the ball to Kelly Dodd who assisted Megan Novak in the box. Novak tipped a shot from two yards out into the bottom left corner of goal for the game-winner.

Miller and Seahawks’ Erica Rodgers exchanged a pair of shots on goal following the score, though both offenses struggled in the lingering minutes before the buzzer sounded at 90.

Delaware will return to CAA action on Friday, Oct. 30, when it hosts Drexel for senior day at 7 p.m.
