Williamsburg, Va. -- Senior Kasie Shover netted a goal merely 3:24 into action to lead the University of Delaware women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the College of William and Mary at Albert-Daly Field on Friday evening.
Delaware (4-3-2 overall, 1-1-1 CAA) snapped William & Mary’s (8-3-0 overall, 2-1-0 CAA) five-game winning streak with the victory.
Shover (at right), a co-captain, notched her first score of 2009 and eighth career goal in a UD uniform after connecting with a Morgan Warrington assist. Warrington, who has now served the only Hen assist for two straight games, dribbled down field and cut to the center before dishing the ball left to Shover.
Shover beat Tribe keeper Grace Barnard as she fired the ball into the right side of the goal to tally the first statistic of the match.
The teams battled out the remaining of the first 45 in the back-and-forth contest before heading to the locker rooms at the break.
As both returned to the field hoping to secure a Colonial Athletic Association win, the teams continued to rally for 32 minutes, before W&M took control of play in the final 13.
The Tribe rattled off seven of their nine second-half attempts though could not break the Hens defense. Erin Liberatore chanced sending the game into overtime as she sent a header towards goal as the final buzzer sounded. The shot sailed wide right as Delaware secured its first CAA victory of the season.
Despite being outshot 13-7, UD’s score in the fourth minute was enough to hold off the home squad. W&M also recorded eight corner kicks to the Hens’ one. Shover laced two shots for the Hens, while senior Caitlyn Germain applied the most pressure for the visitors, blasting three shots at goal.
Senior Annie Bevan notched her fourth shutout of the season, the twelfth of her career, making four saves in goal for the Blue and Gold. Barnard tallied two for the Tribe.
Delaware will return to CAA action on Sunday, Oct. 4 when it travels to Old Dominion University for a 1 p.m. match.
