NEWARK, DE - The University of Delaware earned a men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned a sweep over Rider University 148-94 and 152-91 respectively, Saturday at the Carpenter Sports Building. The University of Delaware men's swimming and diving team (1-0) was led by Mike Gallaher (West Peabody, MA/Peabody). He led the Hens with victories in the 200 Freestyle (1:47.58) and 500 Freestyle (4:53.50). The Hens had a strong performance out of diver Brian Aston (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire). He swept the diving categories, scoring 264.53 in the 1-Meter and 260.32 in the 3-Meter. The University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team (1-0) was led by Jennifer Haus (Newark, DE/St. Mark's) as she captured the 200 Freestyle (1:57.27) and the 500 Freestyle (5:15.21). Diver Tanya Mainville (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) had a strong day as she took the 1-Meter dive (243.6) and the 3-Meter dive (231.6). Rider University was led on the men's side by Scott Berman, who captured the 1,000 Freestyle at 10:04.23 and the 200 Fly (no time reported). On the women's side, Melissa Michalov captured the 50 Freestyle at 25.03 and the 100 Freestyle at 54.58. Other winners for the Hens on the men's side were: Tom Maday winning the 200 IM (2:00.06) and 200 Breaststroke (2:13.51). The Delaware team of Maday, Gallaher, Neumann Marlett and Ian Miller captured the 400 Medley Relay. Delaware's Marlett, John Fernandes, Bryan Kahner and Brian McGillen capture 400 Freestyle (3:22.97). Other winner's for the Hens on the women's side were: Sara Dyson winning the 200 Backstroke (2:28.32). Jenna Blongiewicz captured the 200 IM (2:15.51). The 200 Fly was won by Katherine Fryer (2:15.55). Lisa Dilliger won the 200 Backstroke (2:12.34). Delaware's team of Blongiewicz, Fryer, Haus and Amanda Stouffer won the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:44.42). Delaware will return to action next Saturday when both teams travel to West Chester University for a 1 p.m. start.
