Senior-laden Blue Hen Women Swimmers Seek First America East Title since 1997
There will be plenty of familiar faces around the Rawstrom Pool at the University of Delaware this winter. University of Delaware women's swimming and diving head coach John Hayman welcomes back 18 of the 20 letterwinners from last year's squad that posted an 8-5 dual record and placed fourth overall at the America East championships. With so much talent and experience returning, Hayman hopes that this year's team can regain the form that saw the Blue Hens capture the America East titles in 1996 and 1997. "Since there were no seniors on last year's team, we return virtually 100 percent of last year's team," noted Hayman, who will enter his 11th season as head coach with an impressive dual record of 71-43. "We've added 11 freshmen and one transfer so we have a team that has quite a bit more talent and depth. "We have seven seniors who have been conference finalists and bring three years of conference championship experience into this season," continued Hayman, whose team placed fourth a year ago despite having just one individual champion. "Although our seniors are multi-talented and can compete in several events, we will also need our strong freshman class to take up the slack in the butterfly, distance, and sprint freestyle events." The returning standouts are led by a group of seniors in Sara Dyson, who owns five career top five finishes at the America East championships, including a third place in the 400 medley relay in 1999; Amanda Stouffer, an Academic All-American candidate and the school record holder in the 200 medley relay who placed in the top eight in seven events at the 1999 America East meet, including third place in the 50 freestyle; Christine Johannsen, a three-time America East runner-up in the 200 backstroke who has six career league top five finishes; Lisa Dillinger, the UD record holder in the 100 backstroke (59.82), 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay who owns eight career top five finishes at the America East meet, including a third in the 1999 100 backstroke; Heather Johnson, who placed placed fifth in the 200 freestyle relay at the 1999 America East meet; and Kelly Schubert, a standout freestyle and butterfly specialist. Among the top standouts among underclassmen are sophomores Kathryn Fryer, Jennifer Haus ,Amy Spooner, and Danielle Hack. Fryer set school records in 200 butterfly (2:10.3) and 200 medley relay as a freshman and placed in the top eight in seven events at the America East meet, including a fourth in the 100 backstroke. Haus was Delaware's lone America East champion in 1999, winning team MVP honors after capturing the 200 freestyle event, placing second in the 500 freestyle, and third in the 100 freestyle. Spooner and Hack both competed at the ECAC championships a year ago. Among the top newcomers are transfer Jenna Blongiewicz, who competed at the NCAA Division III championships last year at Simmons (Ma.) College and Sara Casey in the backstroke and freestyle; Devin Redeyoff, Kristi Parcel, Colleen Maschal, Taylor Wright, and Kim Ober in the freestyle sprints and mile; and Lisa McFarland in the butterfly. Sophomore Kristine Kaktins, who missed most of last season with an injury, will be counted on as well in the sprint events. The Blue Hen divers rank among the best in America East led by junior record-setter Tanya Mainville. Mainville, who holds UD standards in both the one and three-meter dive after transferring from the University of Illinois, placed fifth in the one and three-meter events at the 1999 America East championships after placing sixth in the one-meter in 1998. Sophomore Meagan Schuster, daughter of UD diving coach John Schuster, is also a conference contender. The Blue Hens will compete in 10 dual meets during the season leading up to the America East Championships that will be held at Delaware's Harry Rawstrom Natatorium Feb. 18-20.
