ORONO, ME -- The University of
Delaware women's swimming and diving team placed second and
the four-time defending champion Blue Hen men placed third
at the final day of the America East Championships Sunday
evening at the University of Maine's Wallace
Pool.
The Northeastern women won their second
straight league title with 706 points followed by Delaware
(550), New Hampshire (511), Towson (473), Boston University
(455), Maine (423), Drexel (264), Vermont (123). The Blue
Hens, who placed fourth each of the last two seasons,
enjoyed their highest finish since winning the title in
1997.
The Drexel men won their first team title
since 1993, breaking Delaware's four-year reign as
champions. Towson was second with 621 points followed by
Delaware (589), Boston University (495), New Hampshire
(407), Maine (289.50), Vermont (171).
The Blue Hen women had one individual
champion Sunday as freshman Meghan Petry (Villa
Walsh/New Providence, NJ) captured the 1,650 freestyle with
an America East and Delaware record time of 17:02.99. It was
Petry's third school record and third top three finish of
the meet. Petry was one of two Blue Hens to win individual
titles during the meet, joining Sandy Stephens (St.
Mark's/Newark, DE) who won the 200 individual medley on
Friday. Stephens also placed third in the 200 breaststroke
Sunday, breaking her own school record with a time of
2:23.15.
Other top UD finishers Sunday were
Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) who was fourth in
the 1,650 freestyle (17:37.25), Kathryn Fryer
(Severna Park, MD HS) was fifth in the 200 butterfly
(2:10.63), and Jenna Blongiewicz (Andover, MA HS) was
sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:09.69). Fryer, Stephens, and
Haus joined Jill Fitzgerald (Archibishop
Wood/Warminster, PA) in placing sixth in the 400 freestyle
relay (3:37.30).
Leading the Blue Hen men was senior
Mike Gallaher (Peabody/West Peabody, MA) who was
Delaware's lone champion in the meet, capturing the 1,650
freestyle with a time of 16:05.50. Gallaher had three top
three finishes for the meet.
The Hens had five of the top six
finishers in the 1,650 freestyle as Kevin Weisser
(Franklin Regional/Murrysville, PA) was second in 16:23.88
and Bryan Kahner (Jericho, NY HS) was fourth in
16:31.80.
Also for the Hens, Tim Wasiewski
(Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA) placed third in the 200
breaststroke (2:08.79), Rick Dressel
(McKean/Wilmington, DE) was fourth in the 200 butterfly
(1:56.49), and Lavar Larks (Mt. Pleasant/Wilmington,
DE) was sixth in the three-meter dive (400.50 points).
Weisser, Neumann Marlett (Belvidere, NJ HS), Kahner,
and Gallaher teamed to place fifth in the 400 freestyle
relay (3:14.78).
