Petry Sets 200 Butterfly Mark as Hens Win Big

Meghan Petry
NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware freshman Meghan Petry continued to assault the Blue Hen record books, winning three events to lead the Blue Hens to a 169-77 non-league women's swimming and diving victory over Lafayette Wednesday at the Rawstrom Natatorium.

In the men's meet, Lafayette's Rob Bateman had a hand in three victories as the Leopards knocked off the Blue Hen men by a score of 127-112.

Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ), who already holds the UD record in the 1,000 freestyle, set her second record of the season as she won the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:09.26, breaking the record of 2:10.30 set by current teammate Kathryn Fryer in 1999. Petry also won the 1,000 freestyle (10:22.16) and 200 backstroke (2:10.33) as the Blue Hens (3-3) won all but two competitions.

Other Delaware winners were the 400 medley relay (4:07.06) and 400 freestyle relay (3:47.40), junior Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's HS) in the 400 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle (1:57.37), and 500 freestyle (5:14.10), freshman Jillian Fitzgerald (Wood/Warminster, PA) in the 50 freestyle (25.21) 100 freestyle (55.09), and 400 medley relay, junior Amy Spooner (Upper Dublin/Maple Glen, PA) in the 200 individual medley, and freshman Lindsay Mathers (Bowie, MD HS) in the 200 breaststroke (2:35.48).

Lafayette was led by diver Alana Anzalone who captured both the 1-meter and 3-meter events for the Leopards' (2-4) only victories. Nancy Haystrand placed second in both the 200 butterfly (2:12.38) and 400 medley relay while Liz Tutschek was second in both the 400 freestyle relay and 50 freestyle (25.73).

In the men's meet, Lafayette won eight events to improve to 3-3 on the season while the four-time defending America East champion Blue Hens fell to 2-4.

Bateman won the 400 medley relay, 200 individual medley (1:58.95), and 200 breaststroke (2:13.10) to lead the Leopards. Also for Lafayette, Dan Sherry won the 400 medley relay, 50 freestyle (22.20), and 100 freestyle (49.85) while Steve Berkowitz won the 400 medley relay and 200 butterfly (1:57.40).

Delaware got a big day from senior Mike Gallaher (West Peabody/Peabody, MA) and sophomore Lavar Larks (Mt. Pleasant HS). Gallaher won three events for the Hens, capturing the 200 freestyle (1:45.94), 500 freestyle (4:48.88), and 400 freestyle relay while Larks won both diving events, capturing the 1-meter with a score of 226.05 and the 3-meter event with a score of 210.
