Petry Wins Three Events But UD Women Fall to Rider

 

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ -- The University of Delaware men's swimming and diving team had its seven-meet win streak snapped as host Rider University swept the Blue Hen men and women in a non-league meet Saturday afternoon.

The Rider women (4-1) defeated the Delaware women (1-2) by a 125-118 score while the Rider men (4-0) downed the Blue Hens (2-1) 138-97. The sweep marked the first ever by the Broncs over the Blue Hens in swimming.

The Delaware men lost a meet for the first time since falling to West Chester 162-81 last season. Rider downed the UD women for only the second time in 13 all-time meetings.

Rider's women were led by Melissa Michalov and Jen Heuckroth who each won two events. Delaware freshman Meghan Petry was a triple winner for the Blue Hens, winning the 1,000 freestyle (10:30.11), the 200 butterfly (2:13.19), and the 500 freestyle (5:11.12).

Also for the Blue Hens were Jennifer Haus won the 200 freestyle (1:57.66) and was second in the 100 freestyle (55.04), and the 400 freestyle relay team (3:44.10) won its race. Other second place finishes for the Hens were Erin Colbert in the 1,000 freestyle (10:56.76), Jillian Fitzgerald in the 50 freestyle (25.93), Megan Rodgers in the one-meter dive (191.70), Lindsay Mathers in the 200 butterfly (2:15.75), and Jenna Blongiewicz in the 200 backstroke (2:14.72),

Rider won the men's meet as Brandon Pierce, Shaun Lyons, and Dave Kern all won two events. Kevin Weisser was the lone Blue Hen winner as he captured the 1,000 freestyle (10:07.44).

Also for the Hens, Michael Gallaher was second in the 200 freestyle (1:48.08), Rick Dressel was second in the 50 freestyle (22.81) and 200 butterfly (2:03.03), Tim Wasiewski was second in the 200 individual medley (2:02.20) and second in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.13), Lavar Larks was second in the three-meter dive (209.77 points), Brian Salcetti was second in the 100 freestyle (49.87), Bryan Kahner was second in the 500 freestyle (4:55.19), and Neumann Marlett was second in the 200 backstroke (2:06.40).
