March 21, 2002 University of Texas Van Deusen Places 32nd in One-Meter Diving Event
Van Deusen, a junior from Bear, DE (Glasgow HS/Hill School), accumulated 225.65 points in the preliminaries and was not one of the eight divers to advance to the finals. She will compete in the three-meter diving event Friday night. Southern Cal freshman Blythe Hartley won the one-meter title with a score of 350.85, well ahead of second place finisher Yulia Pakhalina of the University of Houston (320.40). Van Deusen, who earlier this year placed eighth at the NCAA Zone competition and won the Colonial Athletic Association title in the one-meter, finished ahead of divers from Stanford, Texas A&M, and Penn State. She is the first diver in Delaware history to compete at the NCAA championships. Other winners during the first evening of competition were the University of Georgia in the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.74), Southern Methodist's Flavia Rigamonti in the 500 freestyle (4:40.13), Auburn's Maggie Bowen in the 200 individual medley (1:53.91), and Georgia's Maritza Correia in the 50 freestyle (21.69).
