JMU, Towson Sweep Hens in CAA Swimming Tri-Meet; Van Deusen Sweeps Diving Events for Blue Hens Once Again
NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men's and women's swimming and diving teams received strong performances from its divers but were each swept by Towson and James Madison in a Colonial Athletic Association tri-meet Saturday afternoon at Rawstrom Natatorium. Junior Lavar Larks (Mt. Pleasant HS/Wilmington, DE) captured both the one and three-meter diving events for the UD men and junior Julie Van Deusen (Hill School, Pa./Bear, DE) remained undefeated this season in both diving events to pace the Blue Hens. James Madison swept both tri-meets as the JMU men defeated Delaware 154-75 and Towson 125.5-113.5 while Towson defeated the Blue Hens 165-76. The James Madison women defeated Delaware 135-108 and Towson 130-111 while Towson downed the Blue Hens 135-102. James Madison improved to 4-2 on the men's side and 4-3 on the women's side while both Towson teams moved to 5-4. The Delaware men dropped to 3-5 on the season while the UD women fell to 5-5. Towson defeated the Blue Hen men for just the second time in 15 all-time meetings while the Tiger women upended Delaware for just the third time in 28 all-time meetings. Delaware met James Madison for the first time in school history. Delaware had two other first place finishes as Sara Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) captured the women's 200 breaststroke (2:25.87) while the 400 medley relay team of Stephens, Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's HS), Kristen Avioli (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA), and Jennifer Haus (St.Mark's/Newark, DE) won in a time of 4:02.59. Also for the UD women, Jill Fitzgerald (Wood/Warminster, PA) was second in the 100 freestyle (54.79) and third in the 400 freestyle relay, Haus was second in the 200 freestyle (1:58.16), and Meghan Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ) was second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:31.76) and third in the 200 butterfly (2:12.17). Sara Stephens also placed third in both the 400 individual medley (4:41.65) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:45.30). For the Delaware men, Kevin Weisser (Franklin Regional/Murrysville, PA) was second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:06.59) and was a member of the second place 400 freestyle relay team that also included Robert Frey (East/West Chester, PA), Bryan Kahner (Jericho,NY HS), and Alex Skacel (Holy Cross/Moorestown, NJ) in a time of 10:06.59. Weisser also was a member of the fourth place 400 medley relay team. Skacel also placed fourth in the 400 individual medley (4:19.99) and 500 freestyle (5:03.46) while Rick Dressel (McKean/Wilmington, DE) was fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:02.12) and 400 medley relay (3:39.89). On the women's side, James Madison's A.C. Cruickshanks won the 500 freestyle, 1,000 freestyle, and 400 individiual medley while Towson's Jennifer Irby won the 100 freestyle, 50 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relay. Leading the way on the men's side was Towson's Aaron Krause won won the 200 backstroke, 200 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relay and JMU's Geoff Myers who won the 400 IM and 500 freestyle. Both Delaware teams will continue action Jan. 19 at Lafayette.
