Blue Hens Earn All-East Honors in Three Events

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The University of Delaware women’s swimming and diving team posted three All-East performances at the first day of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Open Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at the University of Pittsburgh.

The Delaware women earned 65 points on the day and currently stand in eighth place after the first day of action. Boston College leads the team standings with 149 points followed by UMBC and Army with 106 points. Delaware did not score points in the men’s division, which is currently led by UMBC with 187 points. The championships continue through Sunday.

The Hens picked up their highest finish of the night in the women’s 400 medley relay as the team of Kristen Avioli (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA), Sandy Stephens (St. Mark’s/Wilmington, DE), Sara Stephens (St. Mark’s/Wilmington, DE), and Jill Fitzgerald (Archbishop Wood/Warminster, PA) placed fourth with a time of 3:56.70 to earn All-East honors.

Also picking up All-East (top eight) finishes were Sandy Stephens, who placed fourth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.97, and Sarah Peffer (Newark/Newark, DE), who was sixth in the 500 freestyle. Peffer, a first-year transfer from Nebraska, won the 500 freestyle title and two other events at the Colonial Athletic Association championships last week at George Mason.

Also for the UD women, the 200 freestyle relay team of Sara Stephens, Avioli, Peffer, and Krysta Wasiewski (Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA) placed 15th (1:43.53), Meghan Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ) was 15th in the 500 freestyle (5:10.60), Sara Stephens was 16th in the 200 individual medley (2:16.85), Erin Colbert (Newark/Newark, DE) was 24th in the 500 freestyle (5:13.17), and Fitzgerald was 24th in t he 50 freestyle (24.90).

For the UD men, the 400 medley relay team of Bob Frey (East/West Chester, PA), Tim Wasiewski (Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA), Alex Skacel (Holy Cross/Moorestown, NJ), and Kevin Kotowski (Salesianum/Wilmington, DE) placed 18th (3:42.68), Kevin Weisser (Franklin Regional/Murrysville, PA) was 19th in the 500 freestyle (4:44.03), Adam Goldstein (Vernon Township/Highland Lakes, NJ) was 29th in the 500 freestyle (4:49.35), Kotowski was 32nd in the 50 freestyle (22.20), David Hardy (DeMatha/Mt. Rainier, MD) was 38th in the 200 individual medley (2:00.52), and Wasiewski (Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA) was 47th in the 200 individual medley (2:04.77).
