Peffer, Sara Stephens Win Three Events for Blue Hens

TOWSON, MD -- The University of Delaware dominated the diving events and Sarah Peffer captured three first place finishes in the freestyle for the UD women, but it wasn't enough as host Towson University swept a Colonial Athletic Association swimming and diving meet Saturday at Burdick Pool.

Sara Stephens had a hand in three Delaware victories

The Towson men (9-1) won their third straight meet with a 143-86 victory over Delaware (0-5) while the Towson women (6-5) also won their third straight dual with a narrow 122-115 win over the Delaware women (4-2).

Both Delaware teams were competing in their first dual competition since Dec. 6-7 and will now be off for two weeks before returning to action at home Jan. 25 vs. Loyola at Rawstrom Pool.

The Delaware women captured eight first place finishes as Peffer (Newark/Newark, DE), diver Julie Van Deusen (Hill School, Pa./Bear, DE), and Sara Stephens (St. Mark's/Newark DE) all won multiple events. Towson was led by Jennifer Irby who won two events and was part of the winning 400 freestyle relay that clinched the victory.

On the men's side, Delaware captured three first place finishes as freshman Kip Huffman (Seaford/Seaford, DE) won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events and the 400 freestyle relay team of Jeff Shields (Lawrence/Lawrenceville, NJ), Colin Gibson (Radnor/Villanova, PA), Kevin Kotowski (Salesianum/Wilmington, DE), and Kevin Weisser (Franklin Regional/Murrysville, PA) won in a time of 3:44.68. Towson won thanks to a pair of victories from Adam Krause.

Peffer, a transfer from Nebraska, dominated the freestyle events, winning the 200 (1:58.50); 500 (5:10.11), and 1,000 (10:29.31) freestyle events. Her time in the 1,000 was the third best in UD history.

Van Deusen remained undefeated in diving this season as she won both the one-meter (202.58 points) and three-meter (243.68) events and Stephens won the 200 Individual medley (2:09.50) and 200 breaststroke (2:23.02) and swam a leg of the winning 400 medley relay along with Kristen Avioli (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA), sister Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's/Newark, DE), and Jill Fitzgerald (Archbishop Wood/Warminster, PA) in a time of 4:11.12.
