February 19, 2004 Peffer Wins Two More Titles as UD Women Move Up to Fourth Place FAIRFAX, VA -- University of Delaware senior Sarah Peffer captured two more titles and set another school record as the Blue Hen women moved into fourth place in the team standings after the second day of the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday night at George Mason's Aquatic and Fitness Center. The Blue Hen men remained in 10th place in the team standings despite two top 10 finishes. The third day of the championships will get underway Friday with preliminaries at 11 a.m. followed by the championships at 6 p.m. The fourth and final day of competition will be held Saturday. Host George Mason remains in first place on the women's side with 243 points followed by UNC Wilmington (189), Davidson (168), Delaware (144), Old Dominion (131), Towson (121), Drexel (107), William & Mary (105), James Madison (101), and College of Charleston (51). On the men's side, UNC Wilmington is at the head of the pack with 238 points followed by George Mason (233.5), James Madison (178.5), Towson (157), Drexel, (137) William & Mary (107), Old Dominion (101), Davidson (99), College of Charleston (75), and Delaware (69). Peffer, a senior from Newark, DE (Newark High School), upped her career conference title count to six, including three in this meet, in just her second year of competition for the Hens after transferring from the University of Nebraska. She captured her second straight 500 freestyle title Thursday night as she swam to a winning time of 4:54.90, breaking her own school record of 4:58.26 set last season. Peffer then joined the 400 medley relay team for another CAA title, joining the team of Kristen Avioli, Sara Stephens, and Jill Fitzgerald to swim to a winning time of 3:52.90, less than a second off the school record in that event. Also for the UD women, Stephens placed third in the 200 individual medley (2:08.38), Meredith Law was fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:06.47), and Fitzgerald placed ninth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.20, breaking her own school record of 24.30 set in the preliminaries earlier in the day. She broke the record of 24.36 set by Nancy Davis in 1996-97. On the men's side, freshman diver Steve Henn was the Hens' top finisher as he placed sixth in the one-meter diving event with a point total of 234.60 points. Also in that event, fellow UD freshman Dan O'Connell was 11th with a score of 186.95. Also for the Hens, the 400 medley relay team of Alex Skacel, David Hardy, Brendan Spencer, and Colin Gibson placed ninth with a time of 3:36.34. AGATE: Team Standings After Second Day: 1.
