November 15, 2003 Peffer Wins Three Events as Blue Hens Down Rival Drexel NEWARK, DE -- Sarah Peffer won three individual events and Jill Fitzgerald won twice as the University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team defeated Drexel 140-94 in a men's and women's dual meet at Rawstrom Natatorium Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hen women improved to 4-1 with the victory as they downed the Dragons (0-4) for 13th straight time. In the men's meet, the Blue Hens (1-4) fell to Drexel (3-1) 151-86 despite victories from Joe Virion (Concord/Wilmington, DE) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:11.88) and from David Hardy (DeMatha/Rainier, MD) in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.36). Drexel downed the Hens for the fourth straight time. Both Delaware squads will continue action next week at Rider. Peffer, a senior from Newark, DE (Newark HS) who won three titles at last year's Colonial Athletic Association championships, won the 500 freestyle (5:09.02), 1,000 freestyle (10:22.74), and 200 butterfly (2:13.12). Fitzgerald, a senior captain from Warminster, PA (Archbishop Wood), won a pair of sprints, sweeping the 50 freestyle (24.98) and 100 freestyle (54.06) events. Also for the Hens, Sara Stephens (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) won the 200 individual medley (2:12.5), Sara Reed (East/West Chester, PA) won the 200 backstroke (2:09.85), and the 400 medley relay team of Kristen Avioli (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA), Lauren Ostroski (Methacton/Norristown, PA), Sarah Bacewicz (Tolland/Tolland, CT), and Meredith Law (Nansemond/Chesapeake, VA) won in a time of 4:08.17. Avioli was also second in the 50 freestyle and 200 backstroke, Ostroski was second in the 200 individual medley, Stephens and Reed were second in the 400 medley relay, and Law was third in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. In the men's meet, Delaware also got a first place finish from the 400 freestyle relay team of Kevin Kotowski (Salesianum/Wilmington, DE), Brendan Spencer (Yorktown/Arlington, VA), Colin Gibson (Radnor/Villanova, PA), and Corey Sanderson (Einstein/Kensington, MD) in a time of 3:23.13. Sanderson was also second in the 1,000 freestyle while Virion was part of the second place 400 freestyle relay team and also placed third in the 500 freestyle. Diver Steve Henn (Dix Hills/Dix Hills, NY) was third in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events.
