Ninth at CAA Swimming

Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE -
right) became the Blue Hens' lone champion
at the Colonial Athletic Association
swimming championships as she captured the
200 butterfly in a school record time of
2:03.26 on the final day of the meet
Saturday evening at George Mason
University's Jim McKay Natatorium.
The
Delaware women placed ninth in the team
standings while the Blue Hen men placed
10th overall. George Mason won its fourth
straight CAA women's team title while UNC
Wilmington won its fourth straight men's
team title.
Leading
the Delaware men was junior Levan Beridze
who placed fourth in the 100 freestyle,
posting the second best time in school
history with a clocking of 46.02. Beridze
was Delaware's highest men's finisher in
the meet and was the highest finisher for
Delaware at the CAA championships since
Lavar Larks placed fourth in the one-meter
dive in 2002. Beridze's finish was the
highest by a UD swimmer since the 2001
season when Delaware was a member of the
America East conference. Beridze posted
seven top 20 finishes during the meet.
In
the women's race, George Mason posted 583
points to take the title, edging runner-up
Towson (581) by just two points. UNC
Wilmington was third followed by William
& Mary, James Madison, Davidson,
College of Charleston, Old Dominion,
Delaware, and Drexel. Towson's Jennifer
Irby was named Outstanding Swimmer, Mary
Campioli of George Mason was named
Outstanding Diver, Towson's Pat Mead was
named Coach of the Year, and George
Mason's Roland McDonald was named Diving
Coach of the Year.
In
the men's race, UNC Wilmington posted 680
points to outdistance runner-up George
Mason with 635. Old Dominion was third
followed by Drexel, Towson, William &
Mary and James Madison, Davidson, College
of Charleston, and Delaware. Tom
Koucheravy of George Mason was named
Outstanding Swimmer, Dean Berman of UNC
Wilmington was named Outstanding Diver,
Carol Withus of Old Dominion and Peter
Ward of George Mason shared Coach of the
Year honors, and Marc Ellington of UNC
Wilmington was named Diving Coach of the
Year.
Stephens
was Delaware's lone individual champion as
she won the 200 butterfly in a time of
2:03.26, breaking her own school record.
She had placed second in the event at the
CAA meet each of the last two seasons and
was fifth in 2002. She posted six top 10
finishes for the meet, including placing
second in the 100 butterfly and third in
the 200 individual medley.
Also
for the UD women Saturday, Meredith Law
placed fifth in the 1,650 freestyle
(17:23.35) and was joined by Stephens,
Sara Reed, and Ellen Heinz in placing
seventh in the 400 freestyle relay
(3:34.91). Law posted six top 10 finishes
during the meet.
Also
for the Delaware men, the 400 freestyle
relay team of Andrew Zinn, Brendan
Spencer, Adam Blomberg, and Beridze posted
a seventh place finish with a time of
3:09.41.
