FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of Delaware women’s 400 medley relay team placed second overall and the Blue Hen men posted two sixth place individual finishes to highlight the second day of action at the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at George Mason’s Jim McKay Natatorium Thursday evening.
Both Delaware teams moved into eighth place in the team standings after the second day of the four-day event. UNC Wilmington holds the team lead for both the men and women. The third day of action will get underway at 12 noon Friday with preliminary action.
The UNCW men, the four-time defending champions, are in first place with 268 points followed by George Mason, James Madison, William & Mary, Davidson, Drexel, Delaware, Towson, and Charleston in the 10-team field. The Seahawk women are also in first place with 221 points, ahead of four-time defending champion George Mason, William & Mary, Towson, James Madison, Northeastern, Davidson, Delaware, Charleston, Old Dominion, and Drexel in the 11-team field.
Delaware’s 400 medley relay team of Emily Smathers, Lauren Southard (at right), Sarah Begley, and Maryann Walker had the best finish of the day for the Blue Hens as the group finished second with a time of 3:53.89, the fourth best time in UD history and just over two seconds off the winning time of 3:51.84 by William & Mary.
The Delaware men had three top 10 finishes as freshman Matt Abbruzzese placed sixth in the one-meter diving event with a point total of 244.40 points, Andrew Zinn placed sixth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.32, and the 400 medley relay team of Brendan Spencer, Mark Erdosy, Adam Blomberg, and Levan Beridze placed eighth with a clocking of 3:34.68.
Also for the UD men, Beridze was 10th in the 50 freestyle (21.52), Joe Virion was 16th in the 500 freestyle (4:51.51), Spencer was 17th in the 200 individual medley (1:58.85), and James Lavender was 20th in the 50 freestyle (21.97).
Also for the UD women, Michelle Stephens was 10th in the 200 individual medley with the fourth best time in school history (2:11.20), Begley was 12th in the 50 freestyle (24.43) with the third best time in UD history, Cathy Gallagher was 12th in the 200 individual medley (2:12.17), Ellen Heinz was 12th in the 500 freestyle (5:06.66), and Meredith Law was 13th in the 500 freestyle (5:08.38).
