  Delaware Downs La Salle, Rider in Tri-Meet in Philadelphia

athlete photoPHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women’s swimming team defeated La Salle 150-73 and Rider 132-92, while the Delaware men fell to La Salle 143-80 and Rider 136.5-82.5 in a non-conference tri-meet at La Salle on Saturday.

For the Delaware women (7-1), Meredith Law (right) and Lauren Southard each won one individual event, with Law capturing the 500 freestyle in 5:11.41 and Southard taking the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:24.30. The 400 yard medley relay team took first in its event in 4:01.00 and the 400 yard freestyle relay team captured the event in 3:40.16. Kellie Pastore finished second in both the 200 yard individual medley and the 200 yard breaststroke to help the Blue Hens to the victories. The Blue Hen women defeated La Salle for the first time since 1980-81 following four consecutive losses, and also defeated Rider for the 11th time in 12 matchups.

The Delaware men (1-6) saw the reigning Colonial Athletic Associaiton men’s swimmer of the week Andrew Zinn once again win the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 21.61. Levan Beridze also won his event, capturing the 100 yard freestyle in 47.47. The 400 yard freestyle relay team also again won its event, taking the race in 3:12.58. Beridze also came in second in the 50 yard freestyle in 21.92 and Adam Blomberg captured third in the 200 yard freestyle and 200 yard butterfly for the Blue Hens.

Both Blue Hen swimming teams will return to action on January 7 at home against Towson with a CAA meet against the Tigers at the Harry Rawstrom Pool.
