BALTIMORE, MD -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dominated the action Saturday afternoon as the Blue Hens swept Loyola in a non-league dual meet at Loyola’s Mangione Aquatic Center.
Freshmen Katie Zoretic (Rancho Bernardo/San Diego, CA - at right) and Alyson Oliver (Suncoast/West Palm Beach, FL) each won two individual events to lead the Blue Hen women to a 160-78 victory while Matt Abbruzzese (Bellmore/Merrick, NY) and Brendan Spencer (Yorktown/Arlington, VA) each won two individual events to pace the UD men to a 135-94 triumph.
The Delaware women (11-1) won their ninth straight meet - the team’s longest streak since winning a school-record 42 straight duals in 1980-83 - and reached the 11-win mark for the first time since going 12-0 in 1981-82. The Delaware men improved to 4-7, the team’s highest win total since capturing five wins in 2001-02. Both Delaware teams will close out the dual meet season Jan. 27 at Bucknell.
The Loyola women fell to 5-7 while the men dropped to 7-6. Victoria Kamauff won the 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle relay to pace the women while Ryan Reeser won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly to pace the Greyhound men.
Zoretic won the 500 freestyle (5:15.21) and 1,650 freestyle (17:55.91) events while Oliver swept the diving events, winning the one-meter event with 251.40 points and the three meter event with 237.67 points for Delaware.
Also for the Hens, Emily Smathers won the 100 backstroke (1:00.69) and swam a leg of the winning 200 medley relay (1:51.70), Kendall Warren won the 100 freestyle (54.73) and was second in the 200 freestyle (2:00.33), Michelle Stephens captured the 100 butterfly (1:00.39), Sarah Begley won the 50 freestyle (24.97) and 200 medley relay, Stephanie House won the 200 freestyle (1:58.41) and was second in the 100 butterfly (1:00.66), Kellie Pastore won the 200 medley relay and was second in the 200 individual medley (2:15.24), and Maryann Walker won the 200 medley relay and was second in the 50 freestyle (25.25).
On the men’s side, Abbruzzese won both diving events, capturing the one-meter with 257.10 points and the three-meter with 245.02 points while Spencer captured the 200\ individual medley (2:00.17) and 100 backstroke (54.90) and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay team with Mark Erdosy, James Lavender, and Andrew Zinn (1:39.70).\ Zinn also won the 50 freestyle (21.50).
Also for the UD men, Levan Beridze won the 100 freestyle (47.92) and was second in the 50 freestyle (21.81), Troy Sattgast won the 1,650 freestyle (16:50.68) and was second in the 100 butterfly (54.33), John Ohlhaver was second in the 100 backstroke (56.19) and 200 medley relay (1:43.50), Adam Blomberg was second in the 100 freestyle (48.48) and 200 freestyle (1:45.80), and Garrett Arant was second in the 500 freestyle (4:54.98) and 1,650 freestyle (16:57.04).
