NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads closed out their home schedules Saturday afternoon by sweeping by Colonial Athletic Association foe Towson University at Rawstrom Pool.
The Blue Hen men (3-6, 1-4 CAA), who posted their first-ever CAA dual meet victory, downed Towson 119-112 while the Delaware women (9-1, 5-1 CAA) won their sixth straight meet with a 142-99 triumph. The Delaware men snapped a streak of 26 straight conference dual meet losses overall (24 straight in the CAA), winning in league action for the first time since a 148-85 win over Towson on Jan. 22, 2000 when both were members of the America East conference.
Both Delaware teams will close out the dual meet season with road meets at James Madison (Jan. 14), Loyola (Jan. 21), and Bucknell (Jan. 27). The CAA Championships will be held Feb. 22-25 at George Mason University.
Matt Abbruzzese (Bellmore/Merrick, NY), Adam Blomberg (Kamiakin/Kennewick, WA), Joe Virion (Concord/Wilmington, DE), and Andrew Zinn (McKean/Wilmington, DE) each won two events for the Delaware men while Alyson Oliver (Suncoast/West Palm Beach, FL), Kendall Warren (Downingtown/Downingtown, PA - at right), Ellen Heinz (Henderson/West Chester, PA), and Lauren Southard (Watkins Mills/Montgomery Village, MD) also won twice for the UD women.
Abbruzzese won both the one-meter (243.52) and three-meter (233.48) diving events, Blomberg won the 400 freestyle relay (3:12.47) and 200 freestyle (1:45.29) and placed second in the 200 butterfly (1:58.21), Virion won both the 500 freestyle (4:54.39) and 1,000 freestyle (10:04.60), and Zinn captured the 50 freestyle (21.31) and 400 freestyle relay and was second in the 100 freestyle (47.52).
Also for the Hen men, Brendan Spencer won the 400 freestyle relay and was second in the 200 individual medley (2:02.52), Mark Erdosy was second in both the 200 breaststroke (2:18.63) and 400 medley relay and Levan Beridze won the 400 freestyle relay and was third in both the 50 freestyle (21.80) and 100 freestyle (47.54). Towson’s Gordon Amato won three events, capturing the 400 medley relay, 200 individual medley, and 200 backstroke.
On the women’s side, Delaware’s Oliver won both the one-meter (240.37) and three meter (217.43) diving events, Warren was a winner in both the 400 medley relay (3:37.04) and 400 freestyle relay (4:02.74), Heinz won the 400 medley relay and 500 freestyle (5:09.74) and was third in the 200 freestyle (1:57.29), and Southard won the 200 breaststroke (2:24.60) and 400 medley relay.
Also for the Hens, Katie Zoretic won the 1,000 freestyle (10:40.0), Sarah Begley won the 400 freestyle relay, was second in the 100 freestyle (54.58), and third in the 50 freestyle (25.21), Maryann Walker won the 400 freestyle relay, was second in the 200 freestyle (1:56.23), and third in the 100 freestyle (54.95), Emily Watts won the 400 medley relay and was second in both the 200 individual medley (2:14.82) and 200 backstroke (2:09.79), and Stephanie House won the 400 medley relay and was second in the 200 butterfly (2:13.24).
For Towson, Liz Lebherz won the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley and Alyson Hunt captured the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
