  Delaware Women Take 10 Titles on Way to Sweeping Duals at Loyola; Blue Hen Men Win One of Three Duals

Athlete photoBALTIMORE -- The University of Delaware women earned 10 first place finishes to sweep the women’s competition and the Blue Hen men got a first place finish from diver Matt Abbruzzese to win one of three dual meets at the H2ounds Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Invitational hosted by Loyola College Saturday afternoon.

The Delaware women defeated host Loyola 277-01, Marist 221-149, and Niagara 296-71 to capture first place in the two-day meet and improve to 10-1 on the season while the Blue Hen men downed Niagara 260-108 but fell to Loyola 191-177 and Marist 244-126 in their four-way meet. The UD men moved their record to 5-4 in duals this season.

Diver Matt Abbruzzese was the lone individual champion Saturday for the Hens on Saturday as he captured the three-meter diving event with 445.15 points while also placing second in the one-meter event with 242.65 points.

Also for the Hens, Troy Sattgast was second in the 200 butterfly (2:00.13), John Ohlhaver was second in the 100 backstroke (53.76), second in the 200 medley relay (1:39.13), third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.52), and fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:13.86), Brendan Spencer was third in the 200 butterfly (2:01.11), second in the 200 medley relay, third in the 200 freestyle relay, and third in the 400 freestyle relay, Joe Virion was third in the 1,650 freestyle (16:37.1), Mark Erdosy was third in the 200 medley relay and in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.81), Cory Sanderson was third in the 400 individual medley (4:22.10), Ben Blotner was third in the three-meter diving with 401.90 points, and Andrew Zinn was third in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, and 400 freestyle relay.

Delaware’s Kellie Pastore (at right) won the women’s 100 breaststroke (1:08.50) and 200 breaststroke (2:27.38) while the Hens also got wins from the 400 freestyle relay team of Rachel Greene, Sarah Begley, Kendall Warren, and Maryann Walker (3:37.92), from the 200 medley relay team of Emily Smathers, Pastore, Begley, and Greene (1:50.94), from the and 200 freestyle relay team of Greene, Warren, Begley, and Walker (1:39.38); from Stephanie House in the 200 butterfly (2:10.60); from Greene in the 100 freestyle (54.04), from Ellen Heinz in the 1,650 freestyle (17:47.69), by Walker in the 200 freestyle (1:55.34), and by Meredith Law in the 400 individual medley (4:41.35).

Walker was also second in the 200 backstroke (2:10.28) while Begley was second in the 100 butterfly (59.20) and third in the 100 freestyle (54.97).
