BALTIMORE, MD -- Senior Andrew Zinn and freshman Grady Carter finished first and second in the men’s 50-yard freestyle and freshman Cortney Barry (right) swam away from the competition in the women’s 500-yard freestyle as the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming teams turned in a slew of impressive performances on Friday at the H2Ounds Invitational, a four-team event hosted by Loyola University.

After six events in the two-day meet, the UD women hold a commanding 48-point lead on Drexel, but haven’t been able to distance themselves much from Loyola or Marist. Barry scored big points in her signature event, winning the 500 in 5:04.16. The 400-yard medley relay team of Emily Smathers, Meghan Barber, Sarah Begley, and Maryann Walker scored the Hens’ only other win of the day, clocking 4:00.68.

Sophomore Rachel Greene heated up the pool in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing second in 24.75 seconds, while junior Stephanie House teamed up with Barry, Begley, and Walker to take second in the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:52.93).

Senior Michelle Stephens swam to a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.41), while teammate Lauren Guntner chased her home in fifth, just over a second behind. Begley, meanwhile, scored in her third event of the day with a fourth-place finish in the 50 free (25.07).

Zinn established a season’s best of 20.68 seconds en route to a win in the 50-yard freestyle, beating Carter to the wall by just 0.31 seconds. Delaware got more valuable points from the 800-yard freestyle relay team of  Matt Wehrman, John Ohlhaver, Dominic Pavlik, and Adam Blomberg, who swam 6:18.16 to finish second. Blomberg also scored a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley, stopping the clock in 2:00.89.

Junior Matt Abbruzzese took fourth in one-meter diving (236.65), while Adam Mullan, Ross Buckwalter, Scott Tsuchitani, and Bobby MacLeish joined forces to finish fourth in the 400-meter medley relay in 3:40.69.

The Blue Hen men lead Drexel, 56-52, but trail Loyola and Marist by 18 and 20 points, respectively.

The meet continues tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Mangione Aquatic Center.
