RICHMOND, Va. – Cortney Barry and Hans Gillan earned Colonial Athletic Association swimmer of the week awards, while Matt Abbruzzese was named the men’s top diver after the three University of Delaware standouts had impressive showings in the team’s meet against Towson on Saturday.

During the competition, Barry (at right) won three events and set a new school record on the women’s side, while Gillan and Abbruzzese each won a pair of events for the men.

For the women, Barry set a new school mark in the 1,000-freestyle after finishing in 10:04.80. Her pace shaved over four seconds off the five-year-old record previously held by Sarah Peffer.

Barry also won the 200- and 500-freestyle events to round out her impressive performance against the Tigers. In the 200, she paced the field with a season-best time of 1:54.30, while she captured the 500 in 5:00.52.

The honor was the second of the season for Barry after she was also named the top swimmer on December 9. Last year, she was honored as a Mid-Major All-American after reaching the NCAA B-Standard in the 1,650-freestyle during the 2008 CAA Championships.

Gillan garnered the men’s top swimming honor after posting two victories against Towson, including a record-setting performance in the 100-butterfly. During the fly, he broke his own school mark after finishing in 49.90. He has now lowered the record in four of the team’s five meets this season.

Earlier in the competition, Gillan also helped guide the 200-medley relay team to a victory with a time of 1:34.85, while he also posted a season-best mark in the 100-freestyle after placing second in 45.92.

Overall, the junior has been named the CAA men’s swimmer of the week three times. Along with this week’s honor, he was also selected as the top swimmer on November 4 and November 18.

Abbruzzese garnered the team’s first weekly diving honor this season after capturing both the 1- and 3-meter boards against Towson. In the 1-meter event, he took the top spot with a score of 256.42, while he set a new season-best with a 289.27 mark in the 3-meter dive.

During his career, Abbruzzese has now won four weekly diving honors. As a freshman, he earned the award once, while he was twice honored as a sophomore. Last season, he also garnered the Thomas Baranello Award for Outstanding Achievement on the team.

In addition to the three Blue Hens, the conference office selected James Madison’s Jessie Everett as the women’s top diver.
