Blue Hen Women's Swimming Defeats La Salle and Rider As Barry Wins 500 Free and 1000 Free

NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women’s swimming and diving team defeated La Salle and Rider while the Blue Hen men also topped the Explorers but fell to the Broncs in a tri-meet Saturday afternoon at Harry Rawstrom Natatorium.

The UD women’s team defeated La Salle, 189-106, and topped Rider, 178-117, as the Blue Hens improved to 5-1 on the season. The Delaware men, who are now 4-2 on the year, defeated the Explorers, 176-124, but were edged by the Broncs, 155-145.

Hans Gillan led the Blue Hen men’s team as he broke his own school record by winning the 100 butterfly in 50.27. Gillan also captured the 200 butterfly in 1:57.98 and finished second in the 100 freestyle in 47.12 on the day. Other event winners for the Blue Hens were Dominic Pavlik, who took the 500 freestyle in 4:48.63, and Matt Abbruzzese, who won the 3-meter diving with 268.50 points.

John Ohlhaver placed second in both the 100 backstroke in 52.47 and the 200 backstroke in 1:57.04, while Abbruzzese was second in the 1-meter diving with 273.15 points.The Blue Hen 200 medley relay team of Craig Young, Ross Buckwalter, Gillan and Ohlhaver was also second in its event with a time of 1:35.78.

Cortney Barry (above) paced the Delaware women by taking the 1000 freestyle in 10:22.85 and the 500 freestyle in 5:00.48. Maryann Walker won the 200 freestyle in 1:55.87 for the Blue Hens, while Erinne Butler captured the 50 freestyle in 24.72. Donna Healy won the 100 freestyle in 53.75, while Elise Kanegawa was the other event winner for UD as she took the 100 butterfly in 58.63.

Emily Smathers finished second in both the 100 backstroke in 59.28 and the 200 backstroke in 2:06.42 for Delaware, while Lauren Guntner was second in the 1000 freestyle in 10:29.94 and Barry came in second in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.95. Kellie Pastore placed second in both the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.35 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:23.69, while Kiley Friedrich was second in the 200 butterfly in 2;09.67.

Anne Frigo was second in the 50 freestyle in 24.78, Sarah Begley finished second in the 100 butterfly in 59.32, and Shannon Burke came in second in the three-meter diving with 208.65 points. The UD 200 medley relay team of Smathers, Pastore, Kanegawa and Frigo won its event in 1:49.22, while the team of Emily Watts, Hannah Facchine, Begley and Walker came in second place in 1:49.67.

Both Delaware swimming and diving teams will be back in action on December 5-6 when they compete in the Loyola College Invitational.
