ORLANDO, Fl. - The University of Delaware swim teams swept all 14 events during their relay meet against Wheeling Jesuit at the Orlando YMCA yesterday during the Blue Hens' annual winter competition in Florida.
Delaware won every event during the meet. The Hens also captured 11 second-place finishes and four third-place showings against the Cardinals.
The men were led by Grady Carter, Hans Gillan, and John Ohlhaver, who all won three events during the competition. Eight women also captured multiple relays, including freshman Hannah Facchine (at right), who anchored both the 300-Breaststroke and 400-Medley squads.
Carter, Gillan, and Ohlhaver teamed with Zach Schiavo to take the top spot in the 200-freestyle with a time of 1:30.00. The threesome also capped the meet with a victory in the 400-freestyle after joining with Robert MacLeish to finish in 3:20.88.
Gillan, who holds the all-time program record in the 100-butterfly, also won the 300-relay in the discipline after joining Nick Bonifield and Michael Wodoslawsky to post a time of 2:51.10. Delaware later came back to win the 300-backstroke and 300-breaststroke events as well. In the former, Carter, Ohlhaver, and Craig Young cruised to a time of 2:47.00, while Ross Buckwalter, Dominic Pavlik, and Josh Hyman won the latter in 3:13.13.
Delaware rounded out the meet with victories in the 500-freestyle and 400-medley. Schiavo, Pavlik, Nick Woomer, and Jim Losi won the 500-free in 4:32.32, while Young, Buckwalter, Hyman, and Bonifield won the medley in 3:58.97.
On the women’s side, Delaware made quick work of all three freestyle events. In the 500, Donna Healy, Maryann Walker, Cortney Barry, and Stephanie Dodd finished in 5:03.50, while the foursome of Danielle Ferrera, Megan Huber, Jena Marrinucci, and Stephanie DeCrescente took the 200 in 1:45.32.
Huber and Marrinucci returned to the pool along with Kristen McBrien and Elise Kanegawa to win the 400 in 3:50.24.
The Blue Hens did just as well in the other disciplines, winning the 300-yard butterfly, backstroke, and breaststroke relays. Kanegawa, Sarah Begley, and Erinne Butler opened the meet with a dominating performance in the 300-butterfly after cruising to a victory in 3:02.85.
The team of Walker, Emily Smathers, and Emily Watts touched the wall first in the 300-backstroke with a time of 3:09.63, while Meghan Barber, Marriane Flynn and Facchine easily paced the field in the 300-breaststroke after placing in 3:37.75.
The women’s 400-yard medley relay squad rounded out Delaware’s impressive performance as Watts, Smathers, McBrien, and Facchine finished with a time of 4:23.55.
