FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Delaware women’s swimming & diving team opened up Colonial Athletic Association action with a 168.5-131.5 victory over George Mason, while the Blue Hen men fell to the Patriots, 157.5-142.5 during the meet at the Jim McKay Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

The women’s team was led by six champions during the contest, including Cortney Barry (at right) and Kristen McBrien, who both picked up two wins. The men were guided by Hans Gillan and Grady Carter, who each captured an individual title and teamed up for a pair of relay victories.

Barry, who was a provisional qualifier for the NCAA meet last season, had another strong day in the pool. The junior speedster cruised to a pair of victories in long-distance events, capturing the 500-freestyle in 5:08.48 and the 1000-yard event in 10:27.19.

McBrien also took home two titles, highlighted by a strong showing in the 100-back. She won the backstroke with a time of 1:00.84, and later, she teamed with Donna Healy, Jena Marrinucci, and Courtney Raw to win the 400-freestyle relay in 3:36.23.

Among the other victors for the Blue Hens, Erinne Butler won the 50-freesytle with a 24.98 clocking, Allie Brown finished first in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:09.62, and Elise Kanegawa paced the field in the 100-butterfly with a 57.95 showing.

During the meet, the squad also captured the top-three spots during a pair of events. Along with Barry’s victorious performance in the 1000-freestyle, Allie Brown finished second and Lauren Guntner placed third. Delaware did equally as well in the 200-backstroke as McBrien and Aubrey Caldwell finished just behind Brown’s winning effort.

On the men’s side, Carter and Gillan combined to win four events to headline Delaware’s performance. The two standouts teamed up to win both the 200-medley and 400-freestyle relays. In the medley, they joined forces with Ryan Roberts and Ross Buckwalter to finish in 1:34.20 before teaming with Bobby Macleish and Nick Woomer to take the freestyle in 3:09.14.

Carter also cruised to the top time in the 50-freesytle with a 21.22 clocking, while Gillan took the 100-butterfly in 51.66.

After helping capture the medley relay, Roberts also returned to the pool to win an individual event. The freshman standout breezed to the title in the 200-backstroke with a time 1:52.93. He also placed second in the 200-freestyle to round out a strong afternoon.

Thomas Gallagher capped the day for Delaware, picking up the squad’s lone victory in a diving event after winning the 3-meter board with a score of 280.12.

The Blue Hens will return to competitive action on November 6-7 when the squad welcomes UNC Wilmington, Towson, and George Mason to the Rawstrom Natatorium for a CAA pod meet. The competition kicks off at 5 p.m. on Friday before resuming at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
