BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming teams wrapped up their regular season with a tri-meet against UMBC and William & Mary on Saturday afternoon.
The Delaware men picked up a victory over the Tribe, 197-100, but fell to the host Retrievers, 181.5-118.5. The women dropped a pair of decisions as the Hens fell to UMBC, 177-123, and William & Mary, 158-136.
The competition served as the final tune-up for the Blue Hen swimmers before the Colonial Athletic Association championships beginning on February 24. The Delaware divers will still compete in a pair of meets prior to the postseason competition.
On the women’s side, the Blue Hens were led by a clean-sweep in both diving events. Carly Sheppard took the crown in the 1-meter board after posting a score of 227.55. Emily Kasyon (at right) also grabbed the 3-meter dive after earning a 238.15 mark. Erika Bilenki had a strong day as well, finishing second in both events.
Hannah Facchine led the UD swimmers after placing first in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:23.47. She also placed second in the 100-breaststroke (1:06.76) and third in both the 200-medley relay (1:49.22) and 200-individual medley (2:12.37).
Cortney Barry rounded out the Delaware victors after taking the top spot in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 10:19.34. She also returned to the pool to finish third in the 500-free after touching the wall in 5:06.83.
On the men’s side, Grady Carter, Ross Buckwalter, and Ryan Roberts each won two events to lead the Blue Hens. The three standouts teamed with Michael Wodoslawsky to open the meet with a strong showing in the 200-medley relay. In the event, the Delaware foursome finished in a dead-heat for first-place with UMBC’s top crew after touching the wall in 1:34.09.
Following the relay victory, Buckwalter returned to the pool to capture the 100-breaststroke in 57.92, while Grady Carter nabbed the 50-freestyle in 21.14. Roberts also picked up an individual victory after taking the top spot in the 500-free in 4:40.41.
Delaware also benefited from a strong performance from its divers. Brian Coonce won the 1-meter board with a score of 255.90, while Tom Gallagher captured the 3-meter dive after posting a mark of 246.20.
The Delaware divers will return to action next Saturday when the group competes in the Drexel diving meet at 1 p.m.
