UD Netters Advance to Finals vs. Boston U.

FLUSHING, NY – The No. 2 seed University of Delaware women’s tennis team earned a trip to the finals with a 5-0 win over No. 6 Hartford in the semifinals of the America East Tennis Championships Friday at the U.S. Tennis Center.

The Hens, who improved to 13-4 with the win, will take on top seed and five-time defending champion Boston University in the finals today (Saturday) at 12 noon.

The Terriers advanced to the finals with a 5-0 win over No. 4 Hofstra. The winner will earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships to be held in May.

Delaware, which has never advanced to the NCAA Tournament, has been the league runner-up each of the last six seasons.

Delaware, which advanced to the semifinals with a 7-2 win over Towson Friday, earned the win over Hartford as Kristin Wasniewski, Karen Greenstein, Erin Kamen, Jessica Wilkes, and Martine Street all posted straight set wins. No doubles matches were played.

Kamen and Wilkes each improved to 14-3 on the season with Kamen winning her 72nd career singles match, just one shy of the school record 73 won by current UD head coach Laura Travis in 1985-89.

The No. 4 seed University of Delaware men (11-12) were eliminated from the tournament with a 4-2 loss to No. 5 Vermont Thursday. The Hens got their only wins from freshman Lee Kennedy at No. 2 singles and from Jesse Leopold, a native of Vermont, at No. 4 singles.

Kennedy improved to a team-leading 15-8 mark in singles this season. Delaware’s consolation match with Drexel Friday was cancelled due to rain.

Saturday’s mens’ final will match No. 1 seed and defending champion Hofstra vs. No. 2 seed Towson. Hofstra downed Vermont 4-0 and Towson upended Hartford 4-2 on Friday.
