The broken records are starting to sound like broken records. That is the current status of the University of Delaware women's tennis team as the Blue Hens enter the 1999-2000 season. Head coach Laura Travis has built a strong foundation for the Blue Hens, one that has seen Delaware equal a school record for dual wins in a season with 17 victories in three straight seasons. She has also led the Hens to six straight America East Tournament runner-up positions. This season, with all seven letterwinners returning, Travis is thinking that the 1999-2000 team could be the one to take the Hens over the top and past perennial America East power Boston University. "No one graduated from last year's team hence we have a outstanding lineup strengthened by the addition of four talented recruits," said Travis, whose team went 17-9 a year ago for the team's third straight 17-win campaign. "All the America East teams appear to be stronger this year so I am expecting matches to be very close. We graduate three four-year starters and one three-year starter after this season so this would be a great year to send our seniors out with a conference title." The Blue Hens' singles lineup should stay intact with maybe a few changes. Sophomore Elly Giese, whose collegiate debut spread was nothing short of spectacular in 1998-99 when she posted a school record mark of 24-2 at No. 5 singles, won 18 straight matches at one point, and earned All-America East honors, could battle to take over the No. 1 spot from junior Kristin Wasniewski. Wasniewski, who moved from No. 6 in 1997-98 to No. 1 last year, posted a mark of 12-15 a year ago and teamed with Giese to earn first team All-America East honors at doubles (6-0). Wasniewski, who went a perfect 18-0 in singles as a freshman, played both singles and doubles at the ITA Regionals at the end of the fall season 1in 1998. Rounding out the singles ladders is a quartet of talented seniors in Karen Greenstein, Erin Kamen, Tracy Guerin, and Rachel Dencker, and sophomore Martine Street. Greenstein posted a singles record of 15-11 at the No. 2 spot a year ago and improved to 49-16 all-time, good for No. 4 on the UD career singles wins list. Kamen, a co-captain, posted a 21-5 mark at No. 4 singles a year ago. Her career singles record of 58-9 ranks No. 3 all-time, just 15 wins shy of the school record 73 set by current head coach Laura (LeRoy) Travis herself in 1985-88. Both Greenstein and Kamen earned first team All-America East honors for their play. Guerin went 15-11 in 1998-99, mostly at the No. 3 spot, while Dencker was 7-3 at the No. 6 spot. Street enjoyed an outstanding rookie season in 1998-99, posting a singles mark of 10-3 at the No. 6 spot. Among the top freshman hopefuls to crack the top six are Jessica Wilkes and Stefanie Hershfield. Wilkes was a four-year No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles player at Nazareth (Pa.) High School while Hershfield was a three-year No. 1 player at Brewster (NY) High School. Several different doubles combinations return, including Dencker/Wasniewski (8-11), Greenstein/Guerin (11-8), Wasniewski/Giese (6-0), and Kamen/Street (10-5). The America East Championships will be held April 20-22 at Concord Resort in Kiamesha Lake, NY with the winner once again earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.
