Delaware downs Bucknell 6-3

 

LEWISBURG, PA -- The University of Delaware women's tennis team opened up its spring season with a 6-3 victory over host Bucknell Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Hens, playing for the first time since November, improved to 8-4 on the season while the host Bison fell to 1-4 with their third straight loss.

Delaware No. 1 doubles team of Kristin Wasniewski (Archmere) and Rachel Dencker (Concord HS) teamed for an 8-5 win to improve to 8-4 on the season and become the winningest doubles tandem in school history with a 27-5 record. The duo broke the record of 26 wins set by the team of Laura LeRoy and Christie Ellis (26-9) in 1987-88. LeRoy, now Laura Travis, is Delaware's tennis head coach.

Wasniewski, Karen Greenstein, Erin Kamen, and Elly Giese all picked up singles victories for the Hens. Delaware's Rachel Dencker lost at No. 6 singles to snap a 16-match win streak.

The Blue Hens also received a victory from the No. 3 doubles team of Kamen and Martine Street.
