Boston U. Downs Delaware in America East Women's Tennis Final

BURLINGTON, VT -- Top seed Boston University won all six singles matches in straight sets to defeat No. 2 University of Delaware in the America East Women's Tennis Championship match Sunday at the University of Vermont.

With the victory, the Terriers qualify for the NCAA Tournament which begins in May. This year marks the first season that the America East champion earns an automatic NCAA berth.

The Blue Hens (17-9) had a seven-match win streak snapped and were halted in their attempt for their first ever America East title and NCAA tournament invitation. Delaware, which tied a school record for dual wins in a season with 17, has now finished as America East runner-up six straight years.

The Terriers won all six matches in straight sets but Delaware freshman Elly Giese pushed Boston University's Karen Shostakovsky to the limit at No. 5 before falling 7-5, 7-5.

Giese (National Cathedral/Washington, DC), who set a new UD season singles record with 24 wins (24-2) this season, lost for the first time since the fall and had an 18-match win streak snapped, the second longest streak in UD history.

Delaware's Karen Greenstein and Erin Kamen each earned first team All-America East honors as did the No. 1 doubles team of Kristin Wasniewski and Giese.

There was no doubles competition.
