Netters Down Hofstra at America East Tourney; Face No. 3 New
Hampshire in Semifinals
BURLINGTON, VT -- The No. 2 seed University of
Delaware cruised to an 8-1 win over No. 7 seed Hofstra
University in the opening round of the America East Women's
Tennis Championships Friday afternoon at the University of
Vermont.
The Blue Hens (16-8) increased their winning streak to
six matches by capturing all six singles matches in straight
sets. Delaware will play No. 3 seed New Hampshire, a first
round 7-2 winner over Vermont, Saturday at 6 p.m. in the
semifinals.
No. 1 seed Boston University, a 9-0 winner over No. 8
Hartford, and No. 4 Towson, a 5-4 winner over No. 5 Drexel,
will meet in Saturday's other semifinal at 3 p.m. The two
semifinal winners will meet for the title Sunday with the
winner earning an automatic berth into the NCAA
Tournament.
Picking up singles victories for the Hens were Kristin
Wasniewski, Karen Greenstein, Erin Kamen, Tracy Guerin, Elly
Giese, and Rachel Dencker. Giese, a freshman from
Washington, DC (National Cathedral) won her 17th straight
match to improve to 23-1 on the season, breaking the UD
season singles victory mark of 22 set by current UD head
coach Laura Travis (LeRoy) in 1988.
Delaware also got doubles wins from the No. 1 team of
Wasniewski and Giese and from the No. 3 team of Greenstein
and Martine Street.
