UD Women Netters Down Towson; Giese Ties Record

 

TOWSON, MD -- Elly Giese won her 12th straight match at No. 5 singles and tied a school record for singles wins by a freshman as the University of Delaware upended host Towson 5-4 in an America East women's tennis match Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Hens won four of the six singles matches on the way to improving to 11-8 overall, 5-0 America East. The Hens will play at Mt. St. Mary's Sunday.

Giese (National Cathedral/Washington, DC) posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Towson's Eleanor Brooks at the No. 5 singles spot to improve to 18-1 on the season. She tied the UD season win record by a freshman set by current teammates Kristin Wasniewski in 1997-98 and by Erin Kamen and Karen Greenstein in 1996-97.

Also picking up singles victories for the Hens were Greenstein at No. 2, Kamen at No. 4, and Martine Street at No. 6. Kamen improved to 16-3 on the season.

The Hens' lone doubles victory came at the No. 3 spot where Street and Kamen combined for an 8-2 win over Brooks and Jill Rostalsky.
