Hens Finish 2nd for Eighth Straight Year; Travis Named Coach of the Year

 

Elly Giese was named to the America East All-Tournament Team

NEW HAVEN, CT -- The University of Delaware's quest for its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance fell short Sunday as top seed Boston University defeated the Blue Hens 7-0 to capture the America East Women's Tennis Tournament title at the Yale University Tennis Center.

Boston University swept through the weekend, winning every set of all three matches, to capture its seventh straight conference title and earn a berth into the NCAA Tournament. The No. 3 seed Blue Hens, who downed No. 2 Hartford in Saturday's semifinals, placed second for the eighth straight season. The Hens end their season with a record of 7-5.

The Terriers won all six singles matches in straight sets as Christina Causway defeated Elly Giese 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1, Carrie Rose upended Jessica Wilkes 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, Lindsey Dynof bested Martine Street 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3, Elena DeMendoza beat Anisha Talati 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4, Alana Marcu defeated Danielle Wall 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Hannah Bartel downed Jessica Quittman 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot.

Wall (Villa Maria/Newtown Square, PA), a freshman, lost her only match of the season as she had her 10-match win streak snapped to fall to 10-1. Quittman (Harrison, NY HS) fell to 8-3 on the season.

Boston University also won all three doubles matches, including a win at

No. 3 where Alana Marcu and Ning Ham downed Quittman and Talati 8-4. Quittman and Talati (Hillsborough/Bellemead, NJ) dropped to 9-3 on the season.

Giese (National Cathedral/Washington, DC) and Street (Williams/Burlington, NC) each earned All-America East honors.
