Hens Oust No. 2 Seed Hartford; Meet No. 1 Boston U. in Finals

 

Anisha Talati Won at Singles and Doubles for the Hens

NEW HAVEN, CT -- The University of Delaware defeated Hartford 5-2 in the America East Women's Tennis Tournament semifinals Saturday afternoon at the Yale University Tennis Center to earn a berth in Sunday's championship match against six-time defending league champion Boston University.

The Blue Hens, who have finished second in the tournament each of the last seven years, losing to Boston University in both 1999 and 2000, will meet Boston University in the championship match at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Terriers, the No. 1 seed, advanced with 7-0 win over No. 5 seed New Hampshire in Saturday's other semifinal. The winner of the America East title will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

No. 3 seed Delaware, which is now 6-0 all-time vs. Hartford, has now won six straight non-title matches in America East Tournament play.

Hartford, the tournament No. 2 seed, won the doubles point, taking two of the three matches, but the Hens won it in singles as they captured five of the six matches.

Posting singles wins for the Hens were Jessica Wilkes (Nazareth/Bethlehem, PA) at No. 2, Martine Street (Williams/Burlington, NC) at No. 3, Anisha Talati (Hillsborough/Bellemead, NJ) at No. 4, Danielle Wall (Villa Maria/Newtown Square, PA) at No. 5, and Jessica Quittman (Harrison, NY HS) at No. 6. Wall improved to 9-0 on the season while Quittman improved to 8-2.

The Hens' lone loss at singles was at No. 1 where Hartford's Sabina Dyrchs downed Elly Giese 6-1, 6-3. Delaware picked up its only doubles win at the No. 3 spot where Talati and Quittman won to improve to 9-2 on the season.

In Saturday's consolation round matches, No. 6 Towson defeated No. 7 Drexel 4-1 while No. 8 Hofstra defeated No. 4 Vermont 5-2.
