NEWARK, DE -- The University of
Delaware women's tennis team downed Hofstra 6-1 and the
Pride men downed Delaware 5-2 for a split in the team's
America East matches Friday afternoon.
The Delaware women (3-3) won four of the
six singles matches on its way to the 6-1 win at the
Carpenter Sports Building Courts, downing the Pride (3-9)
for the seventh straight time. The Pride lost its fifth
straight match of the season.
In the men's match at the Delaware Field
House Courts, Delaware (3-6) captured wins at No. 1 and No.
2 singles, but Hofstra picked up the rest in the 5-2
victory. Hofstra (5-3), a 2000 NCAA Tournament participant,
downed the Hens for the fourth straight year.
Both Delaware teams will take on America
East foe Drexel Saturday afternoon in
Philadelphia.
Picking up wins for the Delaware women
were Elly Giese (National Cathedral/Washington, DC)
at No. 1 singles, Jessica Wilkes (Nazareth/Bethlehem,
PA) at No. 2 singles, Anisha Talati
(Hillsborough/Bellemead, NJ) at No. 4 singles, Danielle
Wall (Villa Maria/Newtown Square, PA) at No. 5 singles,
and Jessica Quittman (Harrison/Harrison, NY) at No. 6
singles.
Delaware swept the three doubles matches
as Giese and Wilkes won at No. 1, Wall and Street were
winners at the No. 2 spot, and Quittman and Talati teamed
for the win at No. 3 doubles.
Wall improved to a team-best 5-0 on the
season while Quittman improved to 4-1. Talati and Quittman
improved to 5-1 in doubles play this season.
In the men's match, Delaware started out
with wins at the first two singles spots before the Pride
rallied to win the rest of the contests. Delaware junior
Dave Mouber (Moorestown Friends/Mt. Laurel, NJ) posted a
3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hofstra's Sergey Mikeladze at the
No. 1 spot and Hen sophomore Lee Kennedy (North
Mecklenburg/Cornelius, NC) downed Hofstra's Chris Conrad
6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
