Hens Wins Five
Singles Matches to Advance to
Semifinals
NEW HAVEN, CT -- The No. 3 seed University of
Delaware women's tennis team advanced to Saturday's
semifinals with a 6-1 victory over No. 6 Towson University
Friday in the first round of the America East Championships
at the Yale University Tennis Facility.
Delaware (6-4) won the doubles point by taking two of the
three matches then won five of the six singles matches to
win its first round match for the third straight year. The
Blue Hens, runners-up the last seven years in the
tournament, will take on No. 2 Hartford in the semifinals
Saturday at 1 p.m.
In other first round matches, top seed and six-time
defending champion Boston University downed No. 8 Hofstra
7-0, No. 5 New Hampshire upset No. 4 Vermont 4-3, and No. 2
Hartford downed No. 7 Drexel 5-1. Boston University will
take on New Hampshire in the other semifinal match Saturday
at 1 p.m.
The finals will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. with the
champion earning an automatic berth into the NCAA
Tournament.
The Hens, who have defeated Towson eight straight times,
got singles wins from Elly Giese at No. 1, Jessica Wilkes at
No. 2, Martine Street at No. 3, Danielle Wall at No. 5, and
Jessica Quittman at No. 6. Wall improved to 9-0 on the
season.
In doubles, the Hens got wins from Giese and Street at
No. 1 and from Quittman and Anisha Talati at No. 3.
