March 18, 2001 Hufnal Wins at No. 6 Singles for Delaware
NEWARK, DE -- Villanova University swept non-league tennis matches from the University of Delaware Sunday as the Wildcat men downed Delaware 7-0 at the Delaware Field House Courts and the Villanova women downed UD 6-1 at the Carpenter Sports Building Courts. The matches, the home opener for both Blue Hen teams, was originally scheduled for Saturday but were moved back a day due to inclement weather. In the women's match, Delaware (0-1) lost its season opener despite getting wins from freshman Devon Hufnal at the No. 6 singles spot and from Elly Giese and Jessica Wilkes at the No. 1 doubles spot. Hufnal (Dover, DE HS) won her first collegiate match as she downed Villanova's Sara Fabrisio 6-4, 1-6 with a 14-12 tie-breaker. Also winning for the Hens was the No. 1 doubles team of Giese and Wilkes who defeated Julie Darne and Steph Ariot 8-2. Villanova got singles wins from Darne over Giese 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1; Ariot defeated Wilkes 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2, Ashley Young snapped Martine Street's 11-match win streak with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3; Jessica Rybacki downed Anisha Talati 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, and Kelly McAndrew defeated Jessica Quittman 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. In the men's match, Villanova won all six singles matches, five in straight sets, and two of the three doubles matches to post the victory over the Blue Hens (0-2). Delaware's lone winner was the No. 1 doubles team of David Mouber and Lee Kennedy which downed Josh Schofield and Casey Simmons by an 8-6 score. Delaware's No. 6 player, Pat Seitz, took Simmons to three sets before falling 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. In other matches, Brad Adams downed Mouber 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, Schofield downed Kennedy 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2, A. J. Rohde defeated Delaware's Sanjay Khindri 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3, Ryan Devine downed Ari Zweig 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4, and Paul Moore ousted John Fogelgren 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 5 spot.
