Giese Wins at No. 1 Singles, No. 1 Doubles in Blue Hen Loss

Elly Giese picked up wins at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles

NEWARK, DE -- Senior Elly Giese won at No. 1 singles and the University of Delaware swept the doubles point with two victories, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Hens dropped a 5-2 decision to Bucknell University in women's non-league tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Field House Courts.

The Blue Hens, who will begin their annual spring trip to Florida Tuesday at Embry-Riddle College, suffered their eighth straight loss to fall to 3-8 on the season. Bucknell improved to 8-4 with its third straight victory.

Giese, a senior from Washington, DC (National Cathedral), was the Blue Hens' only winner in singles as she posted a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Jill Wurzburg at the No. 1 spot. Giese improved to a team-best 9-6 in singles play this season and improved her career record to 49-31. She needs just one win to become just the fifth player in school history to reach 50 career singles wins.

Bucknell won the other five singles matches as the Hens' Jessica Wilkes, Anisha Talati, Martine Street, Christine Knox, and Beth Principe all fell.

The Blue Hens did win the doubles point as they won two of the three matches. Giese teamed with Wilkes for a 9-8 (8-6) win over Wurzburg and Lauren Maisel at the No. 1 spot and Knox (William Penn/New Castle, DE) and Principe (Watchung Hills/Warren, NJ) teamed for an 8-6 win over the Bisons' Kristin Inglis and Tara Sichko at the No. 3 spot.
