Hen Netters Fall in Florida Opener

Christine Knox won at No. 5 singles

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The University of Delaware got singles wins from Christine Knox at No. 5 and from Beth Principe at No. 6 but the Blue Hens opened their annual spring trip to Florida with a 6-3 loss to host Embry-Riddle Tuesday afternoon.

Delaware, which also got a victory at No. 1 doubles from the team of Elly Giese and Martine Street, tied a school record with its ninth straight loss to fall to 3-9 on the season. The Blue Hens tied the school record set during the 1980-81 season. Embry-Riddle is an NAIA power.

The Blue Hens will next take on Stetson Friday in DeLand, FL. The Delaware men will open play in Florida today (Wednesday) at Stetson.

Delaware went 1-2 in doubles play with Giese and Street combining for an 8-6 win over Natalia Kozyura and Jamie Cristelli at the No. 1 spot.

Delaware suffered straight set losses at each of the first four singles match before Knox (William Penn/New Castle, DE) got the first win of the day with a 6-3, 2-3 victory over Liza Francis, who defaulted due to injury during the second set. Knox improved to 7-4 with the victory.

Principe picked up the other UD singles win of the day as she posted a 6-0, 6-4 win over Embry-Riddle's Katie Shears at the No. 6 spot.
