Opener to Dukes in North
Carolina
WILMINGTON, NC -- The University
of Delaware women's tennis team began a two-game swing
through Wilmington, NC with a 7-0 loss to Colonial Athletic
Association foe James Madison University Saturday at the UNC
Wilmington Tennis Courts.
James Madison swept all six singles
matches and all three doubles matches to improve to 4-3 with
its third straight victory. Delaware, which will take on
host UNC Wilmington Sunday at 11 a.m., dropped its fifth
straight match to fall to 3-5, 0-1 CAA.
The match was the first ever meeting
between the two teams in women's tennis and was Delaware's
first ever CAA match. The Dukes were a CAA semifinalist a
year ago.
JMU swept the six singles matches as
Margie Zesinger defeated Delaware's Elly Giese, 6-2,
3-6, 10-8 at the No. 1 spot; Liz Simon downed Jessica
Wilkes, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2, Christy Michaux defeated
Anisha Talati, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, Spencer Brown
upended Christine Knox, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) at No. 4,
Kristen Veith beat Beth Principe, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5,
and Rebecca Vanderelst was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Julie
Shapiro at No. 6.
In doubles, Michaux and Simon teamed for
an 8-3 win over Delaware's Giese and Wilkes at the No. 1
spot, Vanderelst and Brown downed Talati and Principe, 8-0,
and Brittany Rowley and Zesinger defeated Knox and
Jennifer Lamberton 8-2 at the No. 3 spot.
