March 7, 2002 Wilkes, Knox, and Principe Earns Singles Wins But Hens Fall
NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams returned to action after a five-month layoff Thursday afternoon, splitting a non-league match vs. Lafayette College. The Delaware men (6-2) returned to action for the first time since Oct. 13 and posted a 5-2 victory over Lafayette at the Delaware Field House Courts as the Hens won four singles matches and swept the three doubles match. The Blue Hen women (3-2) saw action for the first time since Oct. 10 and fell to Lafayette by a 4-3 score at the Carpenter Sports Building courts. The Blue Hen men handed the Leopards (6-1) their first loss of the 2001-2002 season as Jon Tully, Dustin Lewis, Dave Mouber, and Ari Zweig posted victories in singles. Sanjay Khindri and Tully combined for a win at No. 1 doubles, Robert Wirth and Sean Kelly teamed for a win at No. 2 doubles, and Mouber and Zweig combined for a win at No. 3 doubles. Tully improved to a team-leading 10-2 at singles play this season. On the women's side, Lafayette improved to 7-1 on the season as it swept the three doubles matches and won half of the six singles matches. Picking up victories for the Blue Hens in singles were Jessica Wilkes at No. 2, Christine Knox at No. 4, and Beth Principe at No. 5 singles. Wilkes improved to 7-2 on the season. The UD men return to action Saturday at the University of Maryland while the UD women host Fordham Sunday at the Delaware Field House Courts. AGATE: Lafayette Women def.
