Hawks Win by Taking
Two of Three Doubles Matches
NEWARK, DE -- Saint Joseph's two
doubles wins proved to be the difference as the Hawks
spoiled the home opener for the University of Delaware
women's tennis team with a 5-4 non-league victory Saturday
afternoon at the Delaware Field House Courts.
The Blue Hens (0-1), who were seeing
their first dual action of the season after opening the year
with competition at the Swarthmore Tournament last weekend,
split the six singles matches with Saint Joseph's but could
manage just one doubles win on the afternoon.
The Hawks defeated Delaware for just the
second time in 17 all-time meetings.
Posting singles victories for the Blue
Hens were senior Jessica Wilkes (Nazareth/Bethlehem,
PA) at No. 1 singles; junior Beth Principe (Watchung
Hills/Warren, NJ) at No. 3 singles, and sophomore Julia
Shapiro (Baldwin/Baldwin, NY) at No. 6 singles. Senior
Christine Knox (William Penn/New Castle, DE) lost a
tough one at No. 2 as she dropped a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5)
decision to Pielar Glodzik.
Delaware got its only doubles victory at
the No. 1 spot as Knox and Wilkes teamed for an 8-5 win over
Lydia Thomas and Katie Bubish.
The Blue Hens will return to action
Tuesday, Sept. 24 at home vs. Villanova at 3 p.m.
