Win as Hens Fall to Monarchs in CAA
Tournament
WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Both the
University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams were
eliminated from the Colonial Athletic Association tournament
with quarterfinal losses Friday morning.
No. 3 seed Old Dominion posted a 4-1 win
over No. 6 seed Delaware in the women's quarterfinals played
indoors at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center in
Williamsburg, VA while the No. 2 seed William & Mary men
ousted the Delaware men from the quarterfinals with a 4-0
victory indoors at the Centre Court Racquet Club in Newport
News, VA. Both matches were scheduled to be played outdoors
in Richmond, VA but were moved to other sites due to
inclement weather.
The Delaware women (8-10), who had won
three of their four previous matches, posted their only
victory at the No. 6 singles spot where Julia Shapiro
(14-6) won by default. At No. 1 singles, Old Dominion's
Nataly Cahana, the two-time CAA Player of the Year and the
No. 23 ranked women's player in NCAA Division I, downed
Delaware's Jessica Wilkes by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Wilkes
had a nine-match win streak snapped and fell to 16-6 on the
season.
Also, ODU's Kerstin Endlich downed
Delaware's Christine Knox at No. 2, Julia Sotiriu
defeated Jen Lamberton 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3, and Verena
Munzinger downed Stefanie Riddle 6-0, 6-0 at the No.
5 spot. Delaware's No. 4 player Beth Principe did not
finish her match as the outcome had been decided. Doubles
were also not played due to the match being
decided.
The Delaware men fell to 11-14 on the
season with the 4-0 setback to the Tribe. William &
Mary's Jeff Kader downed Delaware's Sanjay Khindri
6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, Alex Fish downed Robert
Wirth 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, Stephen Ward ousted Dustin
Lewis 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4, and Zack Malmgren defeated
Adam Liebman 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5. Delaware's John
Tully at No. 1 and Josh Ditman at No. 6 did not
complete their matches because the outcome had been decided.
Doubles were also not played due to the match being
decided.
Both Delaware teams will close out the
2002-03 season Monday at home vs. UMBC with the men playing
at the Delaware Field House Courts and the women playing at
the Carpenter Sports Building Courts. Both starting times
are 3 p.m.
